Bački Monoštor: Discover Vojvodina's Island Village Charm
Bački Monoštor: An Island Village on the Seven Danubes
Bački Monoštor is a small village located just 15 km from Sombor, deserving many epithets for its unique "island" position and preserved spirit of the past. It is known as the place on the Seven Danubes, due to its encirclement by Danube channels, making it accessible exclusively by bridges. It is also referred to as the "Pearl of the Upper Danube" and the "European Amazon."
Preserving Tradition and Crafts
The residents of Bački Monoštor proudly maintain old crafts and traditions, making the village appear as if time stood still in the early 20th century. Alongside the Special Nature Reserve of the Upper Danube, Bački Monoštor is a small oasis where tourists come to escape daily stress and enjoy the beautiful Danube channels.
Besides its lush nature, this small village, home to around four thousand inhabitants, is known for preserving traditional crafts. Here, you might encounter a craftsman making wooden boats, artisans producing wooden clogs, and witness the creation of horseshoes or fishing nets. You will also see local residents in Šokac traditional costumes, symbols of the past that they vividly preserve as part of their cultural heritage.
Natural Beauty and Biodiversity
Bački Monoštor is an island village surrounded by Danube channels on all sides, making it intriguing for those who love to enjoy nature and its beauty. The natural environment, with its rich forests and the aforementioned Special Nature Reserve of the Upper Danube, makes this place a valuable corner in western Vojvodina. The forests are home to over two hundred bird species and are the largest habitat of the roe deer in Serbia. The numerous channels are ideal for fishing, bird-watching, and nature walks. You can rent bicycles and ride along the green trail Dondo - the trail of health, stroll the educational Štrbac trail, or take a boat ride on the Danube or surrounding canals.
Authentic Cultural Heritage
In this small Danube-side village, you will have the opportunity to witness the coexistence of several different nationalities and get acquainted with their customs, folklore, traditional costumes, food, and music. In addition to the Šokci, who live only in this part of Serbia, Bački Monoštor is also home to Serbs, Roma, Hungarians, and Germans, allowing you to enjoy a very multicultural atmosphere.
The village features an interesting homestead "Periškić" where you can learn about the life of bees and their significance to the ecosystem, as well as taste honey brandy, liqueurs, and genuine homemade gingerbread. The best place to experience the culture and lifestyle of the Monoštorians is the ethnological house "Mali Bodrog", built from rammed earth, covered with reeds, and furnished with materials from the surrounding forests. The yard includes a summer house and a well.
The restaurant "Romska duša" is a place to relax and enjoy traditional Monoštori and Roma cuisine, with a focus on "Ciganska pogača" prepared in the famous "Ciganska peć" (Gypsy oven) made of clay.
Gastronomic Offer
Fans of authentic Vojvodinian cuisine can enjoy local restaurants serving traditional specialties such as fish stew, homemade kulen, and various fish dishes. The chalets along the Danube provide an unforgettable experience with freshly prepared meals. After a walk or bike ride on Dondo, we recommend visiting Čarda kod Švabe, a place where you can try excellent fish specialties.
