Maglić: A Cultural Gem with Top Pools and Events
Maglić – A Village for Everyone’s Taste!
Relaxing vacation in some of the most beautiful pools in Vojvodina, a rich history, stunning nature – all of this characterizes Maglić, a small village in the Bački Petrovac municipality. “Yugoslavia in miniature” and “a village that has it all” are just some of the epithets this charming place proudly carries.
History
Currently home to 10 nationalities, Maglić has roots in its multicultural past dating back to the 20th century when numerous ethnic groups settled here in a short period. Today’s Maglić, formerly known as Buljkes, was named during the time of the Danube Swabians, Germans who lived in Vojvodina before World War II. In the years following the war, the village was settled by Greek partisans, who created a state within a state. The village had its own laws and currency, and the former Yugoslavia fully recognized this unique status of the only Greek municipality in the country. Greeks left the village in 1949, making way for Serbian settlers from Bosnia and Herzegovina. That year, Buljkes officially became Maglić. Why Maglić? During the settlement of Serbs not only from Bosnia and Herzegovina but also from Montenegro, the village was named after the Maglić mountain, a border mountain between the two countries. The locals chose this symbolic name to preserve the memory of the last colonization and the people who left their homes in search of a new life.
Culture
The "Bulkes-Maglić" Cultural Center is a great example of cooperation between Serbia and Germany, specifically between Maglić and the German town of Kirchheim unter Teck. The goal is to preserve the memory of the German and other populations of Maglić. In addition, the village is home to KUD "Đura Jakšić", which aims to preserve the traditions, customs, and dances of Serbs from Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
